FAQ

What is the CRTV in Silent Hill: Townfall?
A pocket television Simon carries through St. Amelia — the first-person era's answer to the series' radio. Tuning into unstable analog signals detects nearby threats, hidden items and narrative fragments.
How do CRTV signals work in Townfall?
Pull out the CRTV and tune: unstable broadcasts get clearer as you approach their source. Threat signals point at enemies, collectible broadcasts hide story fragments and secret pickups, and some signals feed directly into puzzles.
Can you use the CRTV while hiding in Townfall?
Yes — unlike the map, the CRTV works inside designated hiding spots, which makes it the safe way to judge whether a patrol has moved on before you come out.

What is the CRTV?

The CRTV is Townfall’s signature mechanic — a pocket television that inherits the classic Silent Hill radio’s job and expands it. Where the radio hissed at monsters, the CRTV tunes: unstable analog broadcasts drift through St. Amelia’s air, and Simon’s little screen is the only way to pull them in. Screen Burn built the game’s whole detection-and-puzzle loop around it — if you haven’t picked it up yet, it arrives during Part 1’s Shorefront route.

What do the different signals mean?

Signals fall into three working categories:

Signal type What it does
Threat Points at nearby enemies — the classic radio warning, upgraded. Static that degrades means something is close
Collectible Hidden broadcasts that only the CRTV can resolve — 18 of them, for the Sweeping Signals trophy; see CRTV signals
Puzzle / narrative Broadcasts that carry story fragments and direct hints — several puzzles, like the pharmacy’s, gate their answers behind a specific signal

The practical loop: pull the CRTV out in every new area, sweep until the static sharpens, and follow it. That habit finds threats before they find you, and it is the only way some puzzle clues exist at all — the pharmacy broadcast on channel 30 being the tutorial example. Other named channels include ~60 (the hotel year) and ~42 twice in CEG HQ.

One control note for PS5 players: tuning asks you to steady the picture and align colours into boxes, and it uses motion controls by default. If that feels fiddly, disable “Enable CRTV Motion Sensor controls” in the control options — the sticks do the same job and the puzzles are unchanged.

How does the CRTV interact with stealth?

Two ways. First, it works inside hiding spots — the map refuses to open while Simon is concealed, but the CRTV doesn’t care, so you can tune from cover to check whether a patrol moved on. Second, its threat signals are how you choose stealth: knowing a Widow or something worse is around the corner is what lets distraction tools — bottles, bricks, radios, car alarms — do their work. The full counterplay kit is in beginner tips.

Are there different CRTV appearances — and does everyone use one?

Cosmetic skins only: CRTV Style: Rusted was an early-purchase bonus and CRTV Style: Beach Edition a PS5 preorder bonus — both covered on the editions page. And one character wrinkle: the CRTV is Simon’s device. In Zoe’s playable sections she carries the Pager instead, which detects enemies the same way without the tuning story layer.
